High Quality Music Education

At Villa Sinfonia, we believe that every student deserves access to high-quality music education. Our programs in the San Francisco Bay Area and Lake Tahoe are designed to make learning music fun, interactive, and engaging, inspiring a lifelong love of music. We believe that the best learning happens together—through collaboration, shared experiences, and the joy of making music as a community.

We are committed to fostering a positive and encouraging environment where every achievement is celebrated and every student feels supported on their musical journey. Through creativity, connection, and celebration of growth, we empower our students to reach their fullest musical potential.

Group Classes

Group classes are designed specifically for young violinists, typically ages 5-12, teaching rhythm, pitch recognition, and performance skills in a supportive setting through games and interactive activities. These foundational classes complement private lessons while progressing through repertoire that prepares the youngest musicians for the Villa Sinfonia orchestra.  There are two full orchestra concerts each school year and a number of additional performance opportunities.

“Our daughter’s interest in playing increased very significantly once she started playing in the group setting, and she was hooked!”

“Our family is in awe of Lynn’s pedagogical methods and patience with the littlest players.”

“Where else in the world could the most novice of players perform along-side some of the most accomplished players in the Bay Area and manage to produce beautiful music?”

Villa Sinfonia

Villa Sinfonia is an entry level full string orchestra, in which students rehearse and perform with professional orchestral players that are also trained music educators. This immersion accelerates students' musical development, exposes them to high-level musicianship, and inspires excellence while building confidence through direct collaboration with accomplished mentors.  To qualify for Villa Sinfonia's orchestras, students are expected to be enrolled in private lessons, whether with a teacher affiliated with Villa Sinfonia or outside of the organization.

Rehearsals are typically twice a month for 1.75 hours.  There are two full orchestra concerts each school year and a number of additional performance opportunities.

“As an adult beginning student, the experience of sitting in the second violin section, surrounded by beautiful string music with my son on the cello, was a thrill.”

“Villa has taught our children not to just play music well, but to be real musicians, to play music together with confidence and joy.”

Villa Sinfonia
Chamber Orchestra

Advanced students are invited to play in the Villa Chamber Orchestra, a professional chamber orchestra with its own concert series. A special feature of Villa's program is that every graduating senior has the opportunity to perform as soloist with the orchestra.

“Our son has learned that an orchestra can produce magic together that is more extraordinary than the sum of the individual players.”

“In a world that mostly celebrates superlative individual achievements--CEOs, divas, soloists, and bravura, Villa celebrates the orchestra, and the extraordinary things that happen when people come together with a love of one thing—music. No matter the level, knowledge or ability, remarkably the music magically coalesces through this shared passion and sounds utterly beautiful."

“Villa sneaks in lessons on poise and professionalism too, while we’re busy bonding with fellow orchestra members, children and adults alike, over our mutual struggle and rewards, all the while building friendship and community.”

Our domestic and international tours offer musicians the chance to perform for new audiences in classic renowned settings such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Esterhazy Palace in Austria. Beyond the stage, families forge lasting friendships as they explore new cities together, share meals, and navigate adventures abroad. These shared experiences transform our orchestra into a true community, creating memories and bonds that will last a lifetime.

“We were fortunate enough to have joined the trip to Washington D.C. It was one of the best experiences our son has ever had.  The concert at Kennedy Center was truly exciting, but the enjoyment and the camaraderie that we shared with the others bonded the group in such a way that can only enhance the experiences they will share back home.”

“The Villa tours we have participated in have created bonding experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.”

“The Family ensemble concerts, as well as the trips to Carnegie Hall and to Budapest and Vienna, were marvelous opportunities for our family to make music and travel together, forging indelible memories.”

Zephyr Camp

Zephyr Camp

Villa Sinfonia’s annual chamber music camp brings young musicians together from across the country for an intensive week of music-making in the beautiful setting of Lake Tahoe’s Zephyr Point Center. Students spend their days rehearsing together and performing frequently for their fellow campers, all in a supportive atmosphere where students both share their progress and draw inspiration from one another's work. Students arrive with some parts prepared and are assigned to two different ensembles with professional coaches.  Additional music is assigned at the camp, some of which is performed within just a few days.  The combination of focused rehearsals and daily beach time on the lake creates an ideal balance—mornings and late afternoons are dedicated to music, while the mid-day break offers the chance to swim, relax, and build friendships. By week's end, students leave with refined ensemble skills, new musical friendships, and memories of making music in one of the most beautiful places in the world.  This camp fills up quickly, and applications are accepted on a first-come first-served basis.

“Our daughter describes her weeks at Zephyr camp as “the best part of her year.”

“Our experience in this immersion music instruction disguised as family camp was intense, rewarding and fun--and we can’t wait for next year.”

“We can’t say enough about how much Zephyr Chamber Music Camp has added to the musical development of both of our children.  The camp, which follows the VSF philosophy of participation for all, allows for a more concentrated learning, plenty of performance opportunities, and loads of fun and camaraderie.”

Why is Villa Sinfonia Unique?

Students Play with Professional Musicians

Playing alongside professional musicians gives young orchestral players an invaluable opportunity to learn by immersion. In rehearsals and performances, students absorb techniques and intricacies of musical tone by sitting in the same section or sharing stands with seasoned musicians. Young musicians usually rise to meet the expectations of their professional colleagues and gain confidence from being treated as equals. Beyond technical growth, playing in a mixed-age orchestra teaches young people about professionalism, collaboration across generations, and the lifelong joy of making music at the highest level they can achieve.

Senior Solo Performances

Every student that graduates from the Villa Sinfonia program in their senior year of high school is given the opportunity to perform a concerto piece as a soloist with full orchestra accompaniment.  Students and teachers jointly select a piece that is matched to their abilities and that represents the culminating achievement of their musical journey with Villa Sinfonia. Months of preparation require focus and discipline as students master challenging repertoire while learning to balance their sound with the entire orchestra. Standing before the orchestra as a soloist is naturally nerve-wracking, but this challenge pushes young musicians to discover new levels of courage and capability. The pride that follows the performance—shared with family, teachers, and peers—becomes a defining memory that graduates carry with them, proof of what they can accomplish when they are given an opportunity to give their best.

Parent Musicians and Family Play

Given Villa Sinfonia’s unique multigenerational community, some parents enroll alongside their children--whether they are accomplished musicians, pick up an instrument again after a long time, or even start learning a new string instrument.  The annual Family Concert is an additional venue for all family musicians to perform together, toddlers to grandparents included.  Playing music together in the orchestra deepens the connection between parents and children far beyond the rehearsal and performance space. This collaborative experience, unique to Villa Sinfonia, builds confidence in young musicians while giving parents insight into their child's growing abilities. The joy of performing together, supporting each other through challenges, and celebrating musical achievements, creates lasting memories and strengthens relationships in ways that few other activities can match.
